Au siècle dernier, dans l'hiver glacé des montagnes d'Auverge, un cheval fou galope en hennissant. Son maître a été assassiné par un sorcier qui vit en solitaire, et qu'on appelle le "Campanier". .Il a tué par cupidité et pour partager son butin avec Fabret, qu'il a envoûté et dont il convoite la fille Catherine. Mais un jeune bûcheron aime aussi Catherine. Dans ce conflit, le Campanier périra et Pierre et Catherine, malgré la jalousie de Marthe, pourront s'aimer "jusqu'à la fin du monde".
